Circular Connectors- The Ultimate FAQ Guide

Choosing the right circular connector involves electrical, mechanical, environmental, and cable requirements. The FAQs below address common engineering questions about connector size, contact configuration, housing material, electrical ratings, waterproofing, locking mechanisms, specialized signal connections, connector replacement, and custom cable assemblie
1. How Do I Choose the Right Circular Connector for My Application?

Choosing the right circular connector requires more than matching the number of contacts. Key factors include signal type, current and voltage, contact count, connector size, locking mechanism, mounting style, termination method, cable diameter, shielding, waterproof requirements, and operating environment.

For an existing design, providing the current connector part number, drawing, or sample is usually the fastest way to identify a suitable connector solution.

2. How Do I Choose the Correct Connector Size and Number of Contacts?

Start with the required number of electrical connections, then consider the available installation space, current requirements, wire gauge, cable diameter, and connector mounting method.

Two connectors with the same number of contacts may have different shell sizes, contact sizes, current ratings, and cable requirements. Therefore, contact count alone should not be used to determine connector compatibility.

3. What Is the Difference Between Metal and Plastic Circular Connectors?

Metal circular connectors generally provide higher mechanical strength and durability, making them suitable for applications involving frequent mating, mechanical stress, vibration, or demanding operating environments. Metal housings can also provide better shielding and grounding performance, but they are typically heavier and more expensive than plastic connectors.

Plastic circular connectors are lighter and more cost-effective. They are a practical choice for equipment where weight, cost, color identification, or electrical insulation is more important than maximum mechanical strength. Compared with metal connectors, plastic housings generally provide lower resistance to impact, mechanical wear, and harsh operating conditions.

The best choice depends on the required durability, operating environment, mating frequency, weight, and target cost.

4. How Do I Select a Circular Connector Based on Current, Voltage, and Wire Gauge?

Current, voltage, and wire gauge should be evaluated together when selecting a connector. The required current affects the appropriate contact size, while the wire gauge must be compatible with the connector’s solder or crimp contacts.

Higher contact counts within a compact connector may also affect the available contact size and electrical rating. Always check the specifications of the specific connector series and contact configuration rather than assuming that all configurations within the same series have identical ratings.

5. Which Circular Connector Is Suitable for Waterproof or Outdoor Applications?

For applications exposed to water, moisture, dust, or outdoor conditions, select a connector series specifically designed for the required level of environmental protection.

Important factors include the required IP rating, mated or unmated condition, cable sealing, panel sealing, cable diameter, operating temperature, and installation environment.

A connector’s waterproof rating should not be assumed to apply to every configuration or installation condition. The complete connector and cable assembly should be evaluated for the intended environment.

6. Which Locking Mechanism Should I Choose: Push-Pull or Threaded?

Push-pull connectors are ideal when fast connection and disconnection are important. The self-latching mechanism allows quick mating without repeatedly rotating the connector, making them suitable for equipment requiring frequent mating and unmating.

Threaded connectors use a screw-coupling mechanism to provide secure mechanical retention and are often selected for industrial, outdoor, or other applications where a firmly secured connection is required.

The appropriate locking mechanism depends on mating frequency, installation space, vibration, mechanical retention, and operating environment.

7. When Should I Choose Coaxial, Triaxial, or Hybrid Circular Connectors?

The correct type depends on the signals or functions that need to pass through the connector.

Coaxial circular connectors are used for RF and high-frequency signal transmission. Triaxial connectors add an additional shielding layer and are suitable for sensitive signals requiring enhanced shielding performance. Hybrid circular connectors combine multiple functions within one interface, such as low-voltage contacts together with coaxial, high-voltage, or fluidic connections.

For these applications, provide the signal type, frequency, impedance, shielding requirements, cable specification, and required contact combination when requesting a connector.

8. How Can I Prevent Mismating When Multiple Connectors Are Used on the Same Equipment?

When several similar connectors are installed close together, mechanical and visual identification methods can help reduce the risk of incorrect mating.

Depending on the connector series, solutions may include different keying configurations, shell sizes, contact arrangements, and color identification options.

For equipment using multiple connector interfaces, provide the complete connector layout and mating requirements so that suitable anti-mismating configurations can be selected.

9. Can INTE-AUTO Cross-Reference My Existing Connector Part Number?

Yes. If you already use a circular connector and need a corresponding INTE-AUTO solution, send us the complete existing part number, connector photos, drawing, mating connector information, contact configuration, and cable specifications.

INTE-AUTO can compare the key mechanical and electrical requirements and help identify the corresponding connector configuration. Compatibility should always be confirmed according to the exact part number and application requirements, rather than appearance or contact count alone.

10. What Information Do I Need to Provide for a Custom Cable Assembly?

For a custom circular connector cable assembly, please provide the connector and mating connector, cable type, conductor count, wire gauge, cable outer diameter, pin assignment, cable length, shielding requirements, bend relief, labeling, and equipment-side termination.

If you already have a wiring diagram, cable drawing, connector part number, or existing sample, providing this information can significantly simplify the cable assembly design and confirmation process.

11. What Information Should I Provide to Get the Correct Connector Recommendation?

To help us recommend the appropriate circular connector efficiently, please provide as much of the following information as possible:

  • Existing connector part number, drawing, or photos
  • Number and type of contacts
  • Current and voltage requirements
  • Signal, data, RF, or power requirements
  • Plug and receptacle configuration
  • Panel-mount or cable-mount requirement
  • Termination method
  • Wire gauge and cable outer diameter
  • Waterproof or IP rating requirement
  • Operating environment and temperature
  • Required cable length and wiring information

For coaxial, triaxial, or hybrid connectors, please also provide the relevant frequency, impedance, shielding, or mixed-contact requirements.

If the exact specifications are not available, send us photos of the existing connector and equipment interface together with the available application information, and INTE-AUTO can assist with the initial connector selection.
