Hermetic Connector Solutions for Vacuum and Sealed Equipment

INTE-AUTO provides hermetic connectors designed for applications where gas leakage, vacuum conditions, pressure differences, and environmental sealing must be considered. Our hermetic connector portfolio includes plugs and panel-mount receptacles in multiple shell sizes and contact configurations, with 2 to 32 contacts and male or female contact options available.

Unlike standard waterproof connectors that primarily protect against external water and solid ingress, hermetic connectors are designed to provide an additional sealing barrier against gas leakage. INTE-AUTO uses epoxy/potting sealing solutions, with rear-side potting available for hermetic plugs and sealed contact interfaces for hermetic receptacles.

Selected configurations provide IP67/IP68 protection. Leak rate, pressure requirements, contact configuration, shell material, and other specifications can also be customized according to the application.

Hermetic Connector Types

Hermetic Plugs

INTE-AUTO hermetic plugs use epoxy potting around the cable termination and rear side of the connector to provide an additional sealing barrier. Multiple contact configurations and cable options are available for vacuum, pressure-related, and sealed equipment applications.

Hermetic Receptacles

INTE-AUTO hermetic receptacles provide a sealed panel interface for electrical connections through equipment housings and enclosures. Epoxy/potting sealing is used to help control gas leakage through the connector interface, with multiple shell sizes and 2 to 32-contact configurations available.

Panel-mount configurations can be customized according to vacuum, pressure, contact, shell material, and equipment installation requirements.

Hermetic Connectors vs. Waterproof Connectors

Hermetic sealing and waterproof protection address different environmental requirements. A connector with a high IP rating is not necessarily a hermetic connector.

Waterproof Connectors

Waterproof connectors primarily prevent water, moisture, dust, and other external contaminants from entering the connector interface. Their environmental protection is normally specified using an IP rating.

Hermetic Connectors

Hermetic connectors are designed to limit gas leakage through the connector or equipment interface, making hermeticity particularly important in vacuum systems, pressurized equipment, sealed enclosures, and other applications where pressure differences exist.

INTE-AUTO Solution

INTE-AUTO hermetic connectors combine epoxy/potting sealing with IP67/IP68 protection in selected configurations, providing solutions where both environmental ingress protection and gas leakage control need to be considered.

Hermetic Sealing

Epoxy-Sealed Hermetic Connector Design

INTE-AUTO uses epoxy/potting technology to create a sealing barrier around the connector contact or cable termination area. For hermetic plugs, sealing is primarily applied around the cable termination and rear side. For hermetic receptacles, epoxy sealing helps provide a sealed electrical interface through the equipment panel.

Different adhesive materials and sealing configurations can be selected according to the connector design and application requirements.

Adhesive Options

Sealing Adhesive Options

Transparent Adhesive – Code T

Transparent sealing adhesive allows the pin marking line to remain visible, making contact identification easier during assembly and inspection.

White Adhesive – Code W

White sealing adhesive provides a clean sealed contact interface. The pin marking line is not visible after sealing.

Black Adhesive – Code N

Black sealing adhesive provides a dark sealed contact interface. The pin marking line is not visible after sealing.

Hermetic Connectors - The Ultimate FAQ Guide

Selecting a hermetic connector requires consideration of the sealing requirement as well as the electrical and mechanical interface. Understanding the required leak rate, vacuum or pressure conditions, contact configuration, installation method, and environmental protection level can help prevent incorrect connector selection.
1. What Is a Hermetic Connector?

A hermetic connector is designed to limit gas leakage through an electrical connection or equipment interface. It is typically used when electrical signals or power need to pass through a sealed enclosure while maintaining controlled internal conditions.

Hermetic connectors are suitable for vacuum systems, pressurized equipment, sealed enclosures, and other applications where gas leakage needs to be controlled.

2. What Is the Difference Between a Hermetic Connector and a Waterproof Connector?

Waterproof connectors primarily protect against water, dust, and other external contaminants, with protection commonly defined by an IP rating.

Hermetic connectors focus on limiting gas leakage through the connector or sealed interface. Therefore, an IP67 or IP68 connector is not automatically hermetic. For vacuum or pressure applications, hermetic performance should be evaluated separately from the IP rating.

3. Are Hermetic Plugs and Hermetic Receptacles Both Available?

Yes. INTE-AUTO provides both hermetic plugs and hermetic receptacles.

Hermetic plugs primarily use epoxy potting around the cable termination and rear side to create an additional sealing barrier. Hermetic receptacles provide a sealed panel interface using epoxy/potting around the contact area to help control leakage through the equipment panel.

4. What Hermetic Connector Series and Contact Configurations Are Available?

INTE-AUTO hermetic connectors are available in 0B, 1B, 2B, 3B, and F Series, with 2 to 32 contacts and male or female contact configurations available.

Different shell sizes and connector configurations can be selected according to the required electrical connection, mating interface, installation space, and equipment design.

5. Are INTE-AUTO Hermetic Connectors Suitable for Vacuum Applications?

Yes. INTE-AUTO provides hermetic connector solutions for vacuum applications.

The appropriate connector and sealing configuration should be selected according to the vacuum conditions, required leak rate, number of contacts, electrical requirements, and equipment interface. Providing these operating conditions allows us to evaluate the appropriate hermetic connector solution.

6. Can Hermetic Connectors Be Customized for Different Pressure Requirements?

Yes. INTE-AUTO hermetic connectors can be customized according to pressure requirements.

When requesting a customized solution, provide the operating pressure, pressure differential, required leak rate, operating environment, and connector requirements so that the appropriate sealing configuration can be evaluated.

7. How Do I Specify the Required Leak Rate for a Hermetic Connector?

The required leak rate depends on the application, vacuum or pressure conditions, allowable gas leakage, and sealing requirements.

When requesting a hermetic connector, provide your required leak rate together with the operating pressure or vacuum conditions. INTE-AUTO can evaluate the sealing solution according to the specific application requirements.

8. Are INTE-AUTO Hermetic Connectors IP67 or IP68 Rated?

Selected INTE-AUTO hermetic connector configurations provide IP67 or IP68 protection, depending on the connector design and configuration.

IP rating and hermetic performance should be evaluated separately. IP67/IP68 describes protection against environmental ingress such as water and dust, while hermeticity relates to controlling gas leakage through the connector or sealed interface.

9. What Sealing Adhesive Options Are Available?

INTE-AUTO offers three sealing adhesive options: transparent (T), white (W), and black (N).

Transparent adhesive allows the pin marking line to remain visible after sealing. With white or black adhesive, the pin marking line is not visible. The appropriate adhesive can be selected according to the connector configuration, sealing requirements, and appearance requirements.

10. Can INTE-AUTO Hermetic Connectors Replace My Existing Original Connector?

Yes. INTE-AUTO provides hermetic connector configurations that can mate with and replace the corresponding original connectors when the series, shell size, contact arrangement, and mating interface are correctly matched.

Send us the original part number, connector photos, drawing, or mating connector information. Our engineers can help identify the corresponding INTE-AUTO model and confirm the required hermetic configuration.
