Medical Connectors – The Ultimate FAQ Guide

Selecting connectors for medical equipment involves more than choosing the number of contacts. Engineers also need to consider connector size, keying, color identification, housing material, operating temperature, sterilization requirements, cable diameter, mounting method, and the risk of mismating when multiple connectors are used on the same device. This FAQ guide explains how INTE-AUTO P Series medical connectors can be configured to meet different equipment and connection requirements.
1. How Can I Prevent Mismating When Multiple Connectors Are Used on the Same Medical Device?

INTE-AUTO provides multiple mechanical keying and color-coding options to help distinguish different connector interfaces and reduce the risk of incorrect mating.

When several similar connectors are installed on the same medical device, different connections can be identified by using:

  • Different mechanical keying
  • Different colored bend reliefs
  • Different colored nuts and back nutsAvailable M10-M14-M16-M20 size
  • Gray, black, or white connector housings
  • Different colored markings applied to the connector housing
  • Different pins configurations

0P Series of M10 Size with pin connection ranges between 2 pins to 9 pins.

1P Series of M14 Size with pin connection ranges between 2 pins to 14 pins.

2P Series of M17 size with pin connection ranges between 2 pins to 32 pins.

Mechanical keying provides physical mismating prevention, while color coding gives operators an additional visual identification method. The two methods can also be combined when multiple similar interfaces are required on the same equipment.

2. What Housing Materials Are Available for INTE-AUTO Medical Connectors?

The INTE-AUTO Plastic Connectors have been manufactured by using excellent quality components whose details are given below:

  • The insulator of the plug and receptacle has been manufactured using Polyphenylene Sulfide (PPS) material that is high-temperature and chemical resistant.
  • The contacts are manufactured using brass plated with gold to ensure thousands of mating cycles.
  • All other components that include an outer shell, collet nut, collet, etc., are manufactured using Polycarbonate (PC) that have low density and provide you with chemical and high-temperature resistance.

Polyphenylene Sulfide (PPS) and Polycarbonate (PC) material have passed the UL certificate that ensures that all connector’s parts are manufactured correctly for higher safety and are eligible for use in the medical industries.

3. How Do I Choose Between PC and PSU Connector Housings?

The choice between PC and PSU depends mainly on the operating environment and reprocessing requirements of the medical equipment.

PC can be considered for applications where the required operating temperature and cleaning conditions are within the material’s capabilities. PSU should be evaluated for applications involving higher temperatures or more demanding sterilization/autoclave conditions.

Please provide the operating temperature, sterilization method, sterilization temperature, cycle conditions, and expected number of cycles so that INTE-AUTO can help evaluate the appropriate housing material.

4. Can INTE-AUTO Medical Connectors Be Sterilized or Autoclaved?

Sterilization and autoclave compatibility depends on the connector material, specific configuration, sterilization method, temperature, pressure, exposure time, and number of cycles.

For applications requiring repeated sterilization or autoclaving, please provide your complete sterilization conditions. INTE-AUTO can evaluate the appropriate housing material and connector configuration according to your requirements.

5. What Information Should I Provide for an Autoclavable Medical Connector?

For applications involving sterilization or autoclaving, please provide as much of the following information as possible:

  • Sterilization method
  • Sterilization temperature
  • Pressure
  • Duration per cycle
  • Expected number of sterilization cycles
  • Cleaning or disinfecting chemicals
  • Connector mating condition during sterilization
  • Cable material and specification
  • Other environmental requirements

These conditions help determine the appropriate connector housing material, cable, sealing structure, and complete cable assembly design.

6. What Keying Options Are Available to Prevent Incorrect Connections?

INTE-AUTO P Series connectors are available with different mechanical keying configurations. Using different keying positions allows similar-sized connectors to be mechanically differentiated, helping prevent a plug from being inserted into the wrong receptacle.

For equipment with several connector interfaces, mechanical keying can be combined with different connector colors for both physical mismating prevention and quick visual identification.

7. Can I Customize the Color of Medical Connectors?

Yes. INTE-AUTO provides multiple color options to help identify different circuits, functions, or equipment interfaces. Depending on the connector configuration, color differentiation can be applied to the bend relief, nut, back nut, connector housing, or housing marking.

Standard housing options include gray, black, and white, while different colored markings can also be applied to the housing for additional identification.

8. How Do I Choose the Correct P Series Medical Connector?

Selection should consider the number of contacts, connector size, cable outer diameter, plug or receptacle configuration, mounting method, current and voltage requirements, keying, color identification, housing material, operating temperature, and sterilization requirements.

If you already use another connector brand, you can also provide the existing part number, drawing, or sample. INTE-AUTO can help evaluate the corresponding connector configuration.

9. How Do I Select the Correct Cable Collet and Bend Relief?

The cable collet and bend relief should be selected according to the cable outer diameter and mechanical requirements of the cable assembly. Proper matching helps secure the cable and provides appropriate strain relief at the connector termination.

Providing the cable datasheet or exact outer diameter allows INTE-AUTO to recommend the appropriate cable collet and bend relief configuration.

10. Can INTE-AUTO Provide Complete Medical Cable Assemblies?

Yes. INTE-AUTO can provide customized medical cable assemblies based on your connector and equipment requirements. Customization can include connector type, cable specification, wiring, cable length, shielding, bend relief, overmolding, equipment-side termination, color identification, and other assembly requirements.

For applications involving sterilization or special operating temperatures, connector and cable materials can be evaluated together according to the actual operating conditions.

11. What Information Should I Provide for a Medical Connector Inquiry?

To help us recommend the correct medical connector efficiently, please provide:

  • Existing connector model, drawing, or sample, if available
  • Number of contacts
  • Plug and receptacle configuration
