SP17 Series Connector FAQs

Explore practical engineering questions about SP17 Series connectors, including termination selection, cable design, panel integration, electrical configuration, mating reliability, environmental use, and system-level connector selection.
1. When Should I Choose Crimp Contacts Instead of Solder Contacts for the SP17 Series?

The termination option depends on the selected contact configuration and production requirements. SP17 Series 2-, 3-, 4-, and 5-contact versions can support solder or crimp termination, while 6-, 7-, and 9-contact versions use solder termination according to the current product specifications.

For production designs, engineers should also consider wire size, assembly process, production volume, serviceability, and tooling requirements when selecting the termination method.

2. Can the Same SP17 Series Connector Be Used for Both Signal and Power Circuits?

SP17 Series connectors can support different signal and power connection requirements, but the electrical rating varies by contact configuration. The 2- and 3-contact versions are rated up to 10 A, while the 4- to 9-contact versions are rated up to 5 A.

Before combining circuits within an equipment design, verify the current, voltage, wire size, contact arrangement, and electrical requirements of each circuit.

3. How Should I Select the Cable for an SP17 Series Connector?

SP17 Series connectors are designed for cables with an outer diameter of 7.0–10.0 mm. In addition to cable OD, engineers should check conductor size, number of conductors, jacket material, flexibility, bend radius, and environmental requirements.

The finished cable construction should be confirmed before connector selection because cable dimensions directly affect assembly and sealing.

4. What Should I Check Before Adding an SP17 Series Receptacle to My Equipment Design?

Confirm the receptacle dimensions, panel cutout, mounting-hole positions where applicable, panel thickness, rear installation space, and mating clearance before finalizing the enclosure.

Engineers should also reserve sufficient space for cable routing and connector operation so surrounding components do not interfere with installation, mating, or maintenance.

5. How Do I Choose Between a Fixed Receptacle and a Flange Receptacle?

The choice depends primarily on the equipment enclosure and mounting structure. A fixed receptacle can be selected for the corresponding equipment mounting design, while a flange receptacle provides a flange-mounted interface with mounting points on the panel.

Review the mechanical drawing and panel layout before selecting the receptacle type rather than choosing only by electrical configuration.

6. Can I Change the Number of Contacts Without Changing the SP17 Series Mechanical Interface?

Yes. Different contact configurations within the SP17 Series share the same mechanical interface and installation dimensions. This allows engineers to change the number of contacts without redesigning the equipment mounting interface.

However, the contact diameter, rated current, wire size, and termination options vary by contact configuration. These electrical and wiring requirements should be rechecked when changing the number of contacts.

7. What Should I Check When Using SP17 Series Connectors in Equipment Subject to Cable Movement?

Consider cable bend radius, cable support, strain at the connector exit, connector mounting, and the frequency of cable movement. Mechanical load should not be transferred unnecessarily to the contacts or sealing interface.

If the cable will move repeatedly during operation, the cable construction and strain-relief design should be evaluated together with the connector.

8. Can an SP17 Series Connector Be Disconnected Frequently for Equipment Maintenance?

The SP17 Series is specified for at least 500 mating cycles. For equipment requiring regular maintenance, engineers should consider the expected connection frequency over the product lifetime as part of connector selection.

The connector and contacts should also be inspected if the application involves frequent mating, contamination, or demanding operating conditions.

9. What Should I Check If My Existing Cable OD Is Close to the SP17 Series Limit?

The specified SP17 Series cable OD range is 7.0–10.0 mm. If the finished cable diameter is close to either limit, confirm the actual production tolerance of the cable rather than relying only on its nominal OD.

This helps ensure that production variations do not create assembly or sealing problems.

10. What Information Should Be Confirmed Before Releasing an SP17 Series Design for Production?

Before production, confirm the connector model, mating pair, contact count, pin assignment, current and voltage requirements, wire size, cable OD, termination method, receptacle mounting dimensions, and operating environment.

For a complete cable assembly, the cable length, opposite end, labels, wiring definition, and drawing should also be reviewed before production.
